What is phishing

Phishing is a social engineering where an attacker masquerade as a reputable entity to trick a person into revealing sensible information.


Different type of phishing

  • Vishing -> telephone voiceline
  • Smishing -> sms links/messages
  • Spear phishing -> targeted phishing with gathered reconnaissance information about victim
  • Spear phishing CEO/CFO -> whaling (large catch)

Techniques used with phishing

  • Typosquating: similar web address
  • Pretexting situation lying to get information
  • Pharming: takeover DNS/website -> redirect to attacker website
